    What it means

Literally “to grab God by the legs.” Means to have incredible luck — to be blessed with extraordinary good fortune, as if you’ve grabbed hold of God himself. The imperfective form “chwytać Pana Boga za nogi” is also used.

    Vocabulary

    • chwycić — to grab / to seize
    • Pan Bóg — the Lord God
    • nogi — legs (plural)

    Grammar note

'Pana Boga' is accusative of 'Pan Bóg' — direct object of 'chwycić.' 'Za nogi' uses the accusative plural of 'noga' after 'za.'

    Cultural context

A vivid, slightly irreverent image. Reflects the intimate, almost familiar relationship Poles have with religious imagery.
