gdyby babcia miała wąsy, toby była dziadkiem

Listen
What it means
Literally “if grandma had a moustache, she’d be grandpa.” The Polish way of dismissing pointless hypotheticals — used to shut down “what if” speculation that leads nowhere. Equivalent to “if my aunt had wheels, she’d be a bicycle.”
Vocabulary
- babcia — grandma
- wąsy — moustache (plural)
- dziadek — grandpa
Grammar note
'Gdyby' introduces a counterfactual conditional. 'Miała' and 'była' are past tense forms used in the conditional mood with 'gdyby/toby'.
Cultural context
A quintessentially Polish response to pointless speculation. Often shortened to just 'gdyby babcia miała wąsy...'
