    What it means

“Don’t play, fool, what isn’t on the table.” A variant of the same proverb using ‘matół’ (fool, dimwit) instead of ‘bawół’. Don’t boast about or offer things you don’t have.

    English equivalent

Don't promise what you can't deliver.

    Vocabulary

    • grać — to play, to pretend
    • matół — fool, dimwit
    • stół — table

    Grammar note

'Matole' is the vocative of 'matół'. 'Czego nie ma na stole' uses the genitive in a negative existential construction.
